Is Blue Light Really Bad?

What You Need to Know About Light, Circadian Health, and the Lucia N°03

Over the years of sharing the Lucia N°03 Light around the world, one of the most frequent questions I receive is this: “Isn’t blue light bad for you?”

It’s a fair question. We’ve all seen the headlines—blue light disrupts sleep, damages the eyes, and should be blocked at all costs. And in certain contexts, especially nighttime exposure to artificial LED screens, there’s truth to that. But what’s missing in much of this conversation is nuance. Not all blue light is harmful, and in fact, your biology requires it at the right time and in the right spectrum.

Let’s break it down, and I’ll share why the Lucia N°03 Light—though visually bright—uses a halogen bulb that mimics the warmth and depth of natural sunlight, creating a very different physiological effect than your phone screen.

Morning Light = Biological Intelligence

Blue light plays a key role in setting your circadian rhythm—your body’s internal clock. In the morning, blue light signals to your brain that it’s time to wake up, increasing alertness, elevating mood, and boosting cognitive function.

A study from Stanford University showed that exposure to daytime blue light (especially in the morning) improved attention, memory, and reaction time by stimulating the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN)—your brain’s master timekeeper—and increasing hypothalamic arousal.

Lucia N°03 light sessions are intentionally recommended in the morning or before 4 pm for this very reason. Just like morning sunlight, flickering full-spectrum light entrains the brain into wakeful, balanced rhythms—especially alpha and theta waves, which are associated with meditative awareness and calm clarity.

Often people refer to Lucia N°03 light sessions as feeling like a massage for the brain, and indeed the programs are designed to support the brain in coming back to a sense of coherence. Dr. Dirk Proeckl, the neurologist and co-inventor of the Lucia N°03 designed the sessions to be experiences of regulation rather than programs designed for specific outcomes. Our innate biology is incredibly intelligent, and as you work with the Lucia N°03, it gently appears to be...reprogramming itself.

Halogen Light ≠ Harsh LED

Many devices today use cool-spectrum LEDs, which are narrowband and can overstimulate the brain with overly blue, disembodied light. But the Lucia N°03 uses a halogen bulb, which emits a full-spectrum glow, including infrared and golden-yellow light—frequencies known to support relaxation, tissue health, and nervous system regulation.

Infrared light, in particular, has been shown to:

  • Stimulate mitochondrial function
  • Improve blood flow and oxygenation
  • Hydrate and relax the fascia, your body’s connective tissue matrix
  • Calm the autonomic nervous system, especially when combined with the rhythmic flicker of photic stimulation

That’s why many people experience deep nervous system relaxation after a session—especially in sessions over 20 minutes, which we often compare to a nap or a lucid dream. Some feel inspired and energized. Others emerge quiet and blissful. Each body responds differently, as we are all incredibly unique. Shorter sessions act more as power-up, allowing the mind to clear and sharpen.

As quantum physics advances, we are learning what a powerful impact frequencies, spectrums and subtle energies have on our system. Our bodies contain a divine intelligence. While it might be tempting to try to control our bodies, attaining balance is at the center of all ancient systems of healing (aryuveda, TCM, etc.).

Tune Into Your Biology

Before blindly adopting any wellness trend—whether it's blocking all blue light or chasing every new biohacking gadget—pause and check in with your own system.

  • Are you sensitive to light? Do you enjoying laying in the sun?
  • How dow you feel after early sun exposure? Have you ever tried it?
  • How do you feel about music? Did you know the Lucia N°03 increases your perception of music?
  • What kinds of light help you feel relaxed, verses stressed? (think lamps in your living room vs. grocery store lighting)
  • How do you feel after a Lucia Light session?

Some people thrive with more stimulation, while others are exquisitely tuned to subtle shifts in their environment. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to light—and that’s why we encourage you to experiment, notice, and trust your lived experience.

As you become more attuned with your senses, and what they enjoy, a marvelous world awaits. Beyond light, there is smell, taste, touch and other feelings and energies that not have a name. Your senses are portals to your inner world, while also being hard-wired biologically.

During a Lucia N°03 light session, you may feel all different kinds of sensations. The light may feel bright at first, as your eyes adjust. In moments, there may be strong waves of intensity. During the light experience you can also ask for the light to be turned down, or even scoot down a bit away from the light. You may stay there or move up again when things settle down again in your nervous system and/or the programming. Memories may drift up, or visions of objects, eyes, or other symbols from another world. For some light travelers, the experience can be difficult to let go into at first. They may find their mind spinning useless webs of thoughts or get concerned about the intensity and resist.

In light sessions, there are two important things to note:

  • you can stop the session at any time, even pause if you want and take a few breaths
  • you can modulate the experience with your breath (learn more about this in our upcoming nervous system regulation post)

Lucia N°03 light sessions are designed to be conducted by a Light Guide, creating a safe container for deep transformation and realignment that is tailored to your personal sensitivity levels. And—regardless of the intensity, Lucia N°03 light sessions have the support of the warm glow of the halogen, which helps your body feel on a deep level that all is well.

Light Is a Language—Learn to Listen

The Lucia N°03 doesn’t just light up your eyelids. It speaks to your nervous system in color, rhythm, and frequency. The neuro-art that is created in your visual field and the feelings of wonder and joy that often accompany light sessions resonates deeply in your body, anchored in through the wide spectrum of light.

When shared intentionally—especially in the morning, or at a retreat when people are open and rested—it becomes a powerful tool for recalibration and inner connection.

If you're curious to learn more, I invite you to:

  • Book a session with a trained with a Light Guide in your area
  • Bring a Light Guide to your retreat or wellness event to offer transformative sessions to your guests

Remember, light, when offered in a way that is aligned with our natural rhythms doesn’t deplete—it awakens, aligns and amplifies.

See you in the light.
