Phosphenes: The Light You See With Eyes Closed

Have you ever closed your eyes and seen sparks, shapes, or shifting patterns of light—in total darkness?

These mysterious flashes are known as phosphenes, and they are more than just a neurological quirk. For those working with the Lucia N°03, phosphenes are part of the journey of expanded insight, creative insight, and deep inner exploration.

What Are Phosphenes?

Phosphenes are spontaneous flashes of light and color experienced with eyes closed—those swirling dots, spirals, or radiant bursts you may remember from childhood. Scientifically, they emerge from:

  • Retinal or cortical stimulation: Light flicker stimulates visual neurons directly
  • Photic Stimulation: In response, brain circuits begin to fire, creating internal visuals.

Scientifically speaking, phosphenes are believed to be caused by electrical or mechanical stimulation of the retina or visual cortex. When triggered—either by pressure, electrical current, or rhythmic light stimulation—the brain begins to generate internal visuals. In some cases, these visuals resemble entoptic phenomena (patterns generated by the eye itself), but in more complex cases, the patterns arise deeper in the brain's architecture.

The Lucia N°03 and Phosphene Activation

The Lucia N°03 is not just another light therapy device. It is a consciousness technology that uses pulsing halogen and LED light to awaken the brain's inner visionary potential. And unlike LED-only lights, the Lucia's central halogen bulb emits a continuous, full-spectrum glow, closer to the sun’s natural warmth. This wider spectrum is key. It doesn't just stimulate the visual cortex—it nourishes it.

As researcher Lemona Zhang, PhD candidate at the University of Sussex, shared during her recent talk at the Lucia N°03 Light Convergence:

"The Lucia light induces states of consciousness comparable to psychedelics, without using any substances."

Her doctoral research explores how stroboscopic light creates visual hallucinations, particularly how frequency and color perception interact. But what she has discovered goes beyond science: these experiences are not random—they are deeply personal, shaped by our expectations, mood, and openness to receive. The Lucia N°03 uses stroboscopic light—a pulsing halogen light flickering at precisely tuned frequencies—to intentionally induce and amplify phosphenes in a controlled setting. With the eyes closed, the flickering light entrains the brain and invites it into harmonic brainwave states, and activates the visual cortex, even without external images.

What unfolds is often described as otherworldly (or for some, a feeling of being home or in a unified field)

💠 Complex mandalas

🌈 Pulsating colors and sacred geometry

🌀 Sensations of spirals, tunnels, and infinite space

Though the light never changes color, users routinely report multi-colored, three-dimensional visuals. How? Because the experience is not merely happening in the eyes—it is happening in the brain, which acts as a gate for consciousness.

Phosphenes act as the canvas, and consciousness provides the brush.

Note:

The Lucia N°03 sessions invite the light traveler to let go on deeper and deeper levels. As they let go, they may encounter additional phenomena, such as:

🌈 Images, scenes, memories

🌀 Visitations from loved ones (especially those who recently passed over

💠 Connections with spirit guides and/or messages from their higher self

🌈 Spontaneous healings or deep realignments

Of course, the depth that people can go in Lucia N°03 sessions depends on how much they are willing and able to let go, and how safe they feel in the presence of their Light Guide.

Drawing the Light Within:

In lab studies at Sussex, participants were asked to draw or digitally recreate the shapes and colors they saw during flicker sessions. Many reported:

  • Tunnel-like spirals
  • Mandalas and starbursts
  • Dynamic color shifts and emotional responses

What emerged were not chaotic scrawls, but deliberate patterns that repeated across individuals. Some visuals were archetypal. Others were unique reflections of each person's psyche.

Lemona explains:

"What you expect and how deeply you can immerse yourself influence what you see. Suggestibility, absorption, and intention all shape the experience."

This aligns beautifully with what Lucia N°03 practitioners know: the light reflects the light within. And when offered with presence, it invites the soul to speak in the language of color, geometry, and feeling. And perhaps, with some practice, even deeper states.

Safe, Non-Pharmacological, Profound

In contrast to psychedelic medicines or intensive meditation retreats, the Lucia N°03 offers a safe, immediate, and non-invasive portal to these states:

  • No substances. No hangover. Just light.
  • Fully customizable intensity and frequency settings
  • Accessible for sensitive nervous systems, many systems on the spectrum, trauma recovery, and integration

Newer research shows that stroboscopic light, especially when used with care, can support reduced anxiety, increased peace, and even emotional release.

In one project led by Zhang's lab, participants undergoing a single 30-minute light session reported decreased depressive symptoms and increased clarity. And yet, the real power of the Lucia may lie in its ability to help people re-pattern their perception of reality.

By gently stimulating the neural circuits that generate phosphenes and entraining the brain into more harmonious rhythms, the Lucia N°03 offers a safe, legal, and repeatable method of accessing altered states.

And because the experience arises within you, it often reflects back your own symbolic language, subconscious imagery, and emotional landscape. In this way, phosphenes become more than visuals—they become mirrors for inner perception.

Phosphenes as Teachers

Why do we see what we see in the light? Some say it's entoptic imagery, a mirror of retinal structures. Others say it's the brain projecting meaning onto ambiguity. But many mystics, artists, and visionaries say: it's the soul showing you what words cannot.

Lucia sessions can bring up memories, dissolve mental clutter, and reconnect us with our creative spark. Through the lens of neuroscience, it may be due to the brain's predictive processing model attempting to make sense of a novel stimulus. But through the lens of the heart, it is something far more poetic: a remembering.

Phosphenes remind us that our perception is not passive—it is creative. The Lucia N°03 harnesses this creativity and gives it a frequency to dance with.

In the space between what is seen and what is imagined, between light and dark, there is an entire dimension of experience waiting to be explored.

This is not just about seeing lights behind your eyes.

It’s about remembering that you are the light—and that perception is not a limitation, but a threshold.

The Mystery of Inner Light

Phosphenes are often dismissed as mere visual noise. But what if they are the beginning of a language we’ve forgotten how to read? A bridge between biology and spirit, science and mysticism?

With the Lucia N°03, phosphenes become portals—not only into your mind, but into the great mystery of perception itself. They remind us that even with eyes closed, there is a universe within, waiting to be seen.

And often, the light you’re looking for...

is already inside.
